The beginning of an exciting cricketing history between Pakistan and England was marked in 1954 when Pakistan made their maiden tour of England and stunned the hosts by winning a Test match at The Oval. Since then, both teams have faced off in exciting matches in every format, resulting in memorable performances, contentious moments, and brilliant moments. Their encounters have always been thrilling due to the stylistic difference between Pakistan’s flair and unpredictable play and England’s traditional, conservative approach. 1950s to 1970: Early Encounters

  • 1954 England v Pakistan- Pakistan and England met for the 1st test series in 1954. It is a 4-match test series which ended in a 1-1 draw. 2 matches of the series ended with a draw, England won the 2nd test match of the series by an innings. However, Pakistan’s victory in the 4th test match at Kennington Oval, London, became a significant milestone in their cricket history. Reginald Simpson (101 runs), Denis Compton (278 runs) had incredible batting in the 2nd test match and contributed heavily to the win of the Three Lions. 
  • 1962 England v Pakistan- In the year 1962, England dominated completely over Pakistan by winning 4-0. Pakistan toured England for the series. Three Lions crushed Pakistan on their home soil. However, the 4th test match ended with a draw between the two teams. Colin Cowdrey, Peter Parfitt, Tom Graveney, and Ted Dexter are some of the key players from the England team who scored an incredible century in the series and contributed heavily in the victory of their team. 
  • 1967 England v Pakistan- England crowned a victory over Shaheens in the 1967 test series by 2-0. Ken Barrington scored a century with 109 runs in the 2nd test match. Ken Barrington also hit a century with 142 runs in the 3rd match. The Shaheens also showed their great performance in that match. Asif Iqbal, Hanif Mohammad, Saeed Ahmed, Majid Khan, and Asif Iqbal are some of the key players from the Pakistan team who showed their incredible batting skills. 

1970s to 1990: Great Dominance of England 

  • 1974 England v Pakistan- Shaheens and Three Lions met for the first ODI series in 1974. It is a 2-match ODI series in which Pakistan toured England. The Green Shirts took over the ground and defeated the Three Lions by 2-0 on their home soil. This series showcases the complete dominance of the Pakistan team over England. Pakistan won the first match by 7 wickets and 2nd match of the series by 8 wickets. Majid Khan scored an incredible century by 109 off 93 in the first game, while Zaheer Abbas hit an innings with 57 runs in the second match of the series. 
  • 1977-1978 Pakistan v England- The Green Caps invited England to play One Day International matches during the 1977–78 series. England, being victorious over Pakistan, won by 2-1. Shaheens secured a win in the 3rd match of the series by 36 runs. Brian Rose, Ian Botham, and Derek Randall are the Leading players of the Three Lions, who helped their team win the series. 
  • 1979 Prudential World Cup- England defeated Pakistan by 14 runs in the 12th match of the 1979 Prudential World Cup. Three Lions scored 165 runs in 60 overs. Pakistan made their full efforts to beat England, but managed to score 151 runs in 56 overs and lost the match. Mike Hendrick became the Star of the game, taking 4 wickets in 12 overs and winning the Man of the Match award for his bowling. 
  • 1982 England v Pakistan- Pakistan toured England for the 3-match test series.  However, England once again crowned a victory on their home ground by 2-1, but Pakistan’s victory at Lord’s, London, is a significant moment in the series. After a long time, Pakistan achieved this victory in the test series. Chris Tavare, David Gower, and Ian Botham are the leading players from the England team who scored a half-century in the ODI series. From the Green Caps team, Mansoor Akhtar and  Zaheer Abbas are the key performers. However, Mohsin Khan scored a double century with 200 off 368 in the second test match was the star performer on the tour.  
  • 1984-1985 Benson & Hedges World Championship- The 8th match of the World Championship was held at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne on 2nd March, 1985. Shaheens dominated over the Three Lions, winning the match by 67 runs. It was a big achievement for the Shaheens. In the game, Mudassar Nazar scored 77 off 102. 
  • 1986-1987 Benson & Hedges World Championship – England defeated the Green Caps by five wickets in the Benson & Hedges Challenge final. Pakistan was invited to bat first and set England a target of 167 runs in 50 overs. When the Three Lions came on the ground for batting, and easily chased the target set by the Green Caps and won the match.  

1991 to 2000s: Era of Tough Rivalry

  • 1992 England v Pakistan- Pakistan edged past England by winning the 1992 test series 2-1. England invited Pakistan for a five-match test series. 2 matches ended in a draw. From the Green Caps, Javed Miandad, Saleem Malik, Aamir Sohail, Asif Mujtaba, Ramiz Raja, and Shoaib Mohammad showed their excellent batting performance in the series. While Aamir Sohail scored an incredible double century in the 3rd match of the test series – 205 off 284. Because of his outstanding performance during the match, he was given the Man of the Match award.  
  • 1991-1992 Benson & Hedges World Cup- Perhaps the most iconic match between the two sides was the 1992 Cricket World Cup final. Pakistan, led by Imran Khan, defeated England to win their first-ever World Cup. The final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was a hard-fought contest that Pakistan won by 22 runs. 
  • 1996 England v Pakistan- In the 1996 test series, Shaheens dominated the Three Lions and won the series 2-0. While 2nd match of the test series ended in a draw. It was the first time that Pakistan overpowered the strong England team in a test series. Inzamam-ul-Haq hit a century in the first test match with 148 off 218. Moreover, Ijaz Ahmed, Moin Khan, Saeed Anwar, and Saleem Malik also scored centuries in the second and third matches of the test series. 
  • 1998-1999 Coca-Cola Cup- In the first match of the 1998-99 Coca-Cola Cup, Pakistan achieved a victory over the Three Lions by 90 runs. Shaheens scored 323 in 50 overs, which is the highest score of the team in the ODI series. Ijaz Ahmed hit a century – 137 off 130. He was awarded the Player of the Match for his phenomenal batting. 
  • 2003 ICC World Cup- In the 2003 World Cup match, England secured a big win over Pakistan by 112 runs. England scored 246 runs in 50 overs, and Pakistan managed to score only 134 runs in 31 overs, unable to beat the target set by England. Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood’s commendable batting helped their team to win the match. 
  • In the 2006 England v Pakistan 4th test match held at Kennington Oval, London, England won the match after the umpires accused Pakistan of ball tampering, and the match was awarded to England, which created chaos in the cricket world. 
  • 2006 England v Pakistan- Both teams met for their first-ever T20I match at Bristol. Pakistan won this match by 5 wickets. They chased the target of 145 runs in 20 overs and scored 148 off 17.5 overs. Shahid Afridi showed his exceptional batting skills and hit 28 runs in 10 balls. Abdul Razzaq took 3 wickets in 4 overs. Shahid Afridi won the Man of the Match award for his phenomenal performance in the match. 
  • 2009 ICC World Twenty20- It is the 6th match of the 2009 T20I World Cup held at Kennington Oval, London, where England won the match by 48 runs. Three Lions scored 185 runs in 20 overs, while Shaheens managed to score only 137/7 in 20 overs and lost the match. 
  • 2010 England v Pakistan- This match is one of the darkest moments in the history of cricket. The 2010 test series between England and Pakistan. It was the spot-fixing scandal involving Pakistani players during their tour of England. Three Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, were banned for their involvement. It became a significant blot in Pakistan’s cricket history.

2011 to Recent Matches:

  • 2011-2012 Pakistan v England- It is the first series between England and Pakistan after the 2010 spot fixing scandal that is being played in Dubai. Pakistan cleaned-swept England by winning 3-0. Pakistan showed its complete dominance over England. Mohammad Hafeez, Taufeeq Umar, Misbah-ul-Haq, Adnan Akmal, and Azhar Ali are some of the leading players from Pakistan who scored an innings in the match. While Azhar Ali (157 runs) and Younis Khan (127 runs) hit a century in the 3rd test match. 
  • 2016 England v Pakistan- It is the 1st test match of the 2016 series played at Lord’s. Pakistan clean-swept England and won the match by 75 runs. Misbah-ul-Haq reached a century with 114 runs and dropped to his knees to perform push-ups to celebrate the victory.
  • 2017 ICC Champions Trophy- In the 1st Semi-Final match of the 2017 Champions Trophy, Pakistan whitewashed England on English Soil by 8 wickets. Pakistan scored 215 runs in 37.1 overs. Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman gave their commendable performance in the match by hitting an innings and helped their team to win this match. 
  • 2019 ICC World Cup- In the 6th match of the 2019 World Cup, Pakistan once again were dominant over the Three Lions and won the match by 14 runs. Welcomed to bat first, Pakistan set the target of 349 in 50 overs. In the second innings, when England came for the batting they managed to score only 334 runs in 50 overs and lost the match. Mohammad Hafeez scored an unbeaten 84 runs in 62 overs and won the Man of the Match title for his excellent batting in the match. 
  • 2022-2023 ICC T20 World Cup- In the Final match of the 2022-23 T20I World Cup, England registered a victory by 5 wickets. In the 2022 T20I World Cup final, England and Pakistan met again, where England secured their second T20 World Cup title.
  • 2023 ICC World Cup- It is the 44th match of the 2023 World Cup held at Kolkata. In this game, England made a comeback and clean-swept the Green Caps by 93 runs. Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and David Willey are the key players from the England team who showcased their best bowling and batting skills and helped their team win the match. 
  • 2024-2025 Pakistan v England- In the 2024 test series, Pakistan earned a fighting victory over England and won the series by 2-1. Kamran Ghulam, Abdullah Shafique, Shan Masood, and Salman Agha are some of the leading players from the Pakistan team in this test series. On the other hand, Joe Root secured a double century with 262 off 375 in the first test match. Harry Brook became the Shining Star for England by scoring an unbeaten 317 off 322 in the first innings of the match. He also won the Man of the Match award for his incredible performance in the match. 

2024 England v Pakistan- England took over the T20I series by winning 2-0. The Three-Lions completely whitewashed Pakistan under the Jos Buttler’s captaincy in the 2024 T20I series. Phil Salt and Jos Buttler’s batting in both matches helped England win the series.
